The age of the samurai ended a long time ago, and between then and now; Japan has been through massive changes. But the strong culture created during the feudal era has persisted throughout the eras - and will forever be a part of the country’s identity.
First arriving in Japan in 1543, these ‘western style guns’ (with an external firing mechanism) soon found favour with the strategists of Japanese warfare: the samurai.
Up until the Meiji Restoration and the establishment of professional infantry, samurai and ashigaru gunners were on the cutting edge of Japanese warfare.
